“Radio” is a song by the Chicago rock band Alkaline Trio, and it appeared as the closing track on their second album, Maybe I’ll Catch Fire, which was released in 2000
Led by Matt Skiba, who recently filled in for Tom following his departure from blink-182, this 3 piece band from Chicago is as underrated as they come. Given that most bands aren’t, trios always impress me. I’ll never understand how 3 people can be multi-instrumentalists and produce songs like this, but that’s neither here nor there
Anyway, this song tells the story of a breakup and all of the self-medicating that follows. The hatred for his ex is actually so great that during the chorus he hopes a plugged in radio falls into her bathwater and electrocutes her to death, which leads me to believe their relationship didn’t end on good terms
This song also has one of my favorite opening lyrics ever: “Shaking like a dog shitting razor blades”. Now I’ve never shit out razor blades before, but I would assume I would also be shaking in that situation. Here I was thinking Taco Bell is the most destructive thing that could come out of my asshole, but razorblades sounds much worse, so I’m thankful it hasn’t happened to me (yet)
PS: Pitchfork gave this album a 3.2/10? What a bunch of fucking clowns
