“Message in a Bottle” is a song by the English rock trio The Police, and it acted as the lead single on their second studio album, Regatta de Blanc, which was released in 1979
This is one of the band’s more famous songs, and I’m sure a lot of younger people like myself remember it from Guitar Hero 2. The main riff used to kill my wrist back in the day, but it’s such a good song that the carpal tunnel it caused was worth it
Despite its generally upbeat sound, the song is kinda dark (at least how I interpret it). The song, to me, tackles the feelings of isolation and loneliness, and the act of sending out a random message in a bottle while stranded on an island is a metaphor for reaching out to people for help with whatever you’re going through. “Woke up this morning, can’t believe what I saw. Hundred million bottles washed up on the shore”. Those lyrics represent that there are plenty of other people out there that feel the exact same way as you do, and you’re never truly alone whenever you feel lost in life
I’ve always thought the idea of sending a message in a bottle is pretty funny. Imagine writing a letter, putting it in a bottle, throwing it into the ocean, and then having no idea where it goes. Even crazier would be finding a message in a bottle and having no idea where it came from. Picture it: You’re walking on the beach one day, look down and pick up a bottle with paper inside, and knowing it came from a complete stranger that lives who knows where. A top tier comedic scenario would be if you opened the letter and it said, “If you’re reading this, go fuck yourself”. Boom roasted. Talk about a total day ruiner. Some person just insulted you anonymously from the other side of the ocean, and there’s absolutely nothing you can do about it. If that were me, I’d have no choice but to try to hunt that person down and fight them. Nobody tells me to go fuck myself and gets away with it, whether it’s right to my face or written on a letter in a mysterious bottle I picked up at the beach
Alongside Rush and blink-182, The Police are probably my favorite rock trio of all time, and I think that’s a perfectly fair list to have. Regatta de Blanc is a fantastic album, so check the rest of it out if you haven’t already
PS: I just realized that Stewart Copeland (Drummer for The Police) kinda looks like Dylan Klebold (One of the Columbine shooters)
Stewart Copeland (Right)
Dylan Klebold
Now I’m not saying that the drummer of The Police shot up Columbine High School, but I’m also not NOT saying it either
Also, let’s go Kansas State and UConn

When we were kids we used to think we were really hilarious singing “Massage in a brothel” to this song. Despite only being 8 years old and not knowing what a massage or a brothel were.
