“Dick Lips” is a song by SoCal pop punk pioneers blink-182. This song acted as the third single released for their second album, Dude Ranch, which was released in 1997 and was the band’s major record label debut
Despite being called “Dick Lips”, it has nothing to do with a guy having a penis where his mouth should be, so I have no idea where that title came from. Classic early blink
Anyway, this song tells the relatable story of getting caught doing something you weren’t supposed to be doing when you were younger, and subsequently getting in trouble and losing your parents’ trust because of it. The inspiration for this song likely came from the fact that blink-182 frontman, Tom Delonge, got expelled from high school at age 16 for showing up drunk to a basketball game. However, everything happens for a reason, and blink-182 wouldn’t exist had this never happened. After being expelled and switching schools, Tom Delonge met Scott Raynor and Mark Hoppus, eventually forming blink-182, so let’s give a quick shoutout to underage drinking and Tom’s high school security guards for making this band happen
All parents are different, so people with strict parents probably relate to this song a lot more than I do. My parents were cool as shit and knew that the more rules they put in place, the more I would feel obliged to break them, so I was essentially allowed to smoke weed and drink throughout high school without my parents trying to micromanage my every move. I still think that’s the best way to parent, as I’ve seen plenty of kids get brought up the opposite way. Strict parents create kids that go to college and can’t handle the culture shock of freedom. As a result, these are usually the dudes that end up dying of alcohol poisoning at a frat party and the girls that fuck everybody in sight their freshman year, but I digress
So whether it was or wasn’t relatable to my upbringing or not, it’s still a great song by a great band and I’m glad it popped up on shuffle today because I haven’t listened to this song since Nam
LYRICS
I know that I was right all along
And I’m hoping, remember, I’m a kid
I know not what I did, just having fun
And yesterday, I thought of you
It left me to think as if I couldn’t walk away
It’s too late, I fell through
A boy who went out when he finished all his chores
Nothing to do
They can’t trust me because I blew it once before
I know I’ve seen you trashed at least one time
Can I blame it on one of my dumb friends?
It’s been awhile since I have used that line
And yesterday, I thought of you
It left me to think as if I couldn’t walk away
It’s too late, I fell through
A boy who went out when he finished all his chores
Nothing to do
They can’t trust me because I blew it once before
A boy who went out when he finished all his chores
Nothing to do
They can’t trust me because I blew it once before
