“January 10th, 2014” is a song by the Connecticut indie rock band The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, and it appeared as track 3 on their 2nd studio album, Harmlessness, which was released in 2015
For starters, can we all agree that The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die is the most indie rock band name of all time? Due to it’s length, it’s usually abbreviated to The World Is A Beautiful Place, or even just the acronym TWIABP, but regardless, fantastic name
Moving on, I have to admit that I cheated on this blog because it isn’t a true Shuffle Song Of The Day. Instead, I saw today’s date, remembered this song, and decided I had to blog about it
This song is based on the true story of an unknown vigilante that began killing city bus drivers in Cuidad Juárez, Mexico back in 2013. These killing were not the result of boredom or because the bus company raised the fare prices. These were retaliation killings due to a number of assaults on women by late-night bus drivers in the city that were being largely ignored by local law enforcement and politicians for decades. The story became even stranger when, days after the murders, a local tabloid received an email from the alleged killer, who referred to themselves as, “Diana, The Hunter” (a reference to the Roman goddess of hunting). As you can hear in the lyrics and see in the music video, this song plays on those ideas heavily. “Diana” is the protecter and avenger for all of the women that were assaulted, so she begins hunting down their predators, which is a pretty cool concept
When I first heard this song, I knew nothing about any of this, and I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that. I already loved this song because the instruments sounds great (especially those drum fills), but after doing some research on the lyrics and seeing the music video, it gave me whole new appreciation for this song. Just example number 1 million of why music fucking rules
