“Today” is a song by the Chicago alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins, and it was 1 of the 4 singles from their 2nd album, Siamese Dream, which was released in 1993
(Left is the original album cover, right is the remastered version)
Now I’ve been a fan of smashing pumpkins—both the band and the recreational activity—for as long as I can remember. Loyalty to this band should be pretty self-explanatory because they make great music, but the recreational activity part might have some of you confused. Being a piece of shit kid on Halloween Night was the best, and for whatever reason, grabbing pumpkins from somebody’s front steps and smashing them in the street was pure ecstasy. I guess there’s just something primal about it, and if any psychologists are reading this and wanna chime in with an explanation, I’m all ears
Anyway, back to the song. Although happy sounding, both instrumentally and (somewhat) lyrically, it’s actually about a day that lead singer, Billy Corgan, thought about killing himself. That happiness/sadness dichotomy is what makes the song work the way that it does, and the music video really drives that point home
Depression, and its ultimatum, suicide, are complex things that a lot of people out there are lucky enough to not understand, and to say I’m envious of that kind of mindset doesn’t even do it justice. Buy hey: What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and if you’re like me and go through periods of intense depression from time to time, just keep on keeping on. There’s always music. ALWAYS.
LYRICS
Day I’ve ever known
Can’t live for tomorrow
Tomorrow’s much too long
I’ll burn my eyes out
Before I get out
Than life could ever grant me
Bored by the chore
Of saving face
Day I’ve ever known
Can’t wait for tomorrow
I might not have that long
I’ll tear my heart out
Before I get out
That never forget
I tried so hard
To cleanse these regrets
My angel wings
Were bruised and restrained
My belly stings
Today is
Today is
The greatest day
I want to turn you on
I want to turn you on
I want to turn you
Today is the greatest day
Today is the greatest day
That I have ever really known
Yas! Their my favorite band. I personally don’t believe Billy is a jerk, but good blog post anyways. And great song off a great album!

I don’t really mind him either, but definitely a common complaint that a lot of people think he’s a prick haha. His Alex Jones interview is pretty funny though, I can’t tell if he’s serious or not

True. Don’t know why so many people hate on him, I think he’s a good guy. He’s certainly an interesting fella. Mega fan of his music tho!
