“I Don’t Like Mondays” is a song by the Irish rock band The Boomtown Rats that appeared on their 1979 album The Fine Art Of Resurfacing
It’s only fitting that this song popped up on shuffle today, because I’m having a MONDAY right now. I had a solid gambling day yesterday so I decided to celebrate with a little Sunday Funday action. This lead to me drinking my face off and then I stayed up way too late playing Xbox for some reason, so this workday has been one of those days that feels like it’ll never fucking end. Maybe that instinct is right, because it’s somehow only half way over
Anyway, as awful as this Monday has been for me, it’s still a way better Monday than the particular one this song is talking about. If you didn’t know, this happy sounding song is actually about the Cleveland Elementary School Shooting that happened in San Diego on 1979. On the morning of January 29th, 1979, a 16 year old girl named Brenda Spencer opened fire at Cleveland Elementary School from her house, which was located right across the street. She killed the principal, a janitor, and wounded 8 children and a responding police officer. She then barricaded herself inside the house, and during a phone call with reporters, she was asked why she did it. She calmly answered, “I don’t like Mondays. This livens up the day”, hence the title of the song
Something about that answer makes me feel so uneasy. Its succinct nature tells you just how insane this Brenda Spencer bitch is if her idea of making a Monday more exciting is shooting at 8 year olds first thing in the morning. Call me old fashioned. but if I need to liven up my Monday, I’ll pour some Baileys in my coffee or something, but whatever floats your boat I guess
LYRICS
Gets switched to overload
And nobody’s gonna go to school today
She’s going to make them stay at home
And daddy doesn’t understand it
He always said she was as good as gold
And he can see no reason
‘Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be sure
I don’t like Mondays
I don’t like Mondays
I don’t like Mondays
I want to shoot
The whole day down
As it types to a waiting world
And mother feels so shocked
Father’s world is rocked
And their thoughts turn to their own little girl
Sweet sixteen ain’t that peachy keen
Now, it ain’t so neat to admit defeat
They can see no reasons
‘Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need oh, woah
I don’t like Mondays
I don’t like Mondays
I don’t like Mondays
I want to shoot
The whole day down
Down, down
Shoot it all down
She wants to play with her toys a while
And school’s out early and soon we’ll be learning
And the lesson today is how to die
And then the bullhorn crackles
And the captain tackles
With the problems and the how’s and why’s
And he can see no reasons
‘Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to die, die
Gets switched to overload
And nobody’s gonna go to school today
She’s going to make them stay at home
And daddy doesn’t understand it
He always said she was as good as gold
And he can see no reason
‘Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be sure
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
Tell me why
Tell me why
I don’t like, I don’t like, (tell me why) I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
I want to shoot, the whole day down, uh, uh, uh
I have always loved this song, and I was properly freaked out when someone told me the meaning behind it!

I used to always hear this song on the radio going to school every Monday morning and just figured it was a catchy song about Mondays. Wasn’t until I was older and learned the real meaning, and yes, it freaked me out too

No I didn’t know there was one, but I just added it to my list. I love true crime stuff and this shooting and quote has always been interesting to me
