Shuffle Song Of The Day (4/23/19): “Werewolves Of London” By Warren Zevon

“Werewolves of London” is a song by Warren Zevon that appeared on his 1978 album Excitable Boy. Now the story goes that this song began as nothing more than a joke, and in some ways, you could argue that it still is. Zevon and a friend of his were watching the 1935 movie Werewolf of London one day, and they decided that there was potential to make a modern song about this in some capacity. Apparently their instinct was correct, because the song was a hit, and it is very clearly Zevon’s most known song. It peaked at 21 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was the first and only top 40 hit of Zevon’s career. The song itself is funny to me for a number of reasons. For starters, I just luagh thinking about high they had to be to come up with and write this song. The song is basically about Zevon walking around London and seeing werewolves doing random, normal things in between murders. For example, he sees werewolves looking through Chinese food menus and drinking pina coladas. Although this sounds like a blast, he also mentions that the werewolves are mutilating people around the city like the invasive species that they are. Zevon has this weird way of creating really cheery sounding songs like this that are actually anything but that. The piano is so uplifting and positive, and most people probably recognize the melody because Kid Rock sampled it for his song “All Summer Long”, which is a fantastic day drinking song by the way. Another great example of this is Zevon’s “Excitable Boy”, which although harmless in sound instrumental wise, is actually about a grave robbing, necrophiliac teenager. Excitable boy is fucking right. Anyway, this song is great, and as I always am with these, I’m glad this popped up on my shuffle today. I’ll end this by saying that I think the shock of the century is that this song was somehow not used in John Landis’ 1981 film “An American Werewolf In London” Swing and a fucking miss on that one.

LYRICS

I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand
Walking through the streets of SoHo in the rain
He was looking for a place called Lee Ho Fook’s
Gonna get a big dish of beef chow mein
Aaoooooo
Werewolves of London
Aaoooooo
Aaoooooo
Werewolves of London
Aaoooooo
You hear him howling around your kitchen door
You better not let him in
Little old lady got mutilated late last night
Werewolves of London again
Aaoooooo
Werewolves of London
Aaoooooo
Aaoooooo
Werewolves of London
Aaoooooo
He’s the hairy-handed gent who ran amuck in Kent
Lately he’s been overheard in Mayfair
You better stay away from him
He’ll rip your lungs out, Jim
I’d like to meet his tailor
Aaoooooo
Werewolves of London
Aaoooooo
Aaoooooo
Werewolves of London
Aaoooooo
Well, I saw Lon Chaney walking with the Queen
Doing the Werewolves of London
I saw Lon Chaney, Jr. walking with the Queen
Doing the Werewolves of London
I saw a werewolf drinking a piña colada at Trader Vic’s
And his hair was perfect
Aaoooooo
Werewolves of London
Draw blood
Aaoooooo
Werewolves of London
