Shuffle Song Of The Day (3/19/19): “Dick Lips” By Blink 182

I know I’ve been slacking pretty hard lately on these, but I’m gonna try to get back in the habit of posting these at the frequency I used to. “Dick Lips” is a song by the pop punk pioneers Blink 182 from their 1997 sophomore album, yet major record label debut, Dude Ranch. This song acted as the third single released for that album. Despite being called “Dick Lips”, it has nothing to do with a guy having a penis where his mouth should be, so I have no idea where that title came from. Instead, the song tells the relatable story of getting caught doing something you weren’t supposed to be doing when you were younger, and subsequently losing your parents trust because of it. The inspiration for this song likely came from the fact that frontman Tom Delonge got expelled from high school at 16 for showing up drunk to a basketball game and causing a scene, and I’m sure he got quite the parental talking to after doing so. Kinda cool fact though: Blink 182 wouldn’t exist had this not happened, because it was after being expelled and switching schools that Delonge met Scott Raynor and Mark Hoppus, so shoutout to underage drinking and Tom’s high school security guards for making this band happen. All parents are different, so people with strict parents probably relate to this song a lot more than I do. My parents were cool as shit and knew that the more rules they put in place, the more I would feel obliged to break them, so I was essentially allowed to burn and drink throughout high school as long as I didn’t get arrested (Which only happened twice). Whether relatable to my upbringing or not, it’s a great song and I was glad it popped up on shuffle today because I hadn’t listened to this since Nam.

LYRICS

Please, mom

You ground me all the time

I know that I was right

All along

And I’m hoping

Remember I’m a kid

I know not what I did

Just having fun

You couldn’t wait for something new

And yesterday I thought of you

It left me to think as if I couldn’t walk away

It’s too late, I fell through

Nothing to lose

A boy who went out when he finished all his chores

Nothing to do

They can’t trust me because I blew it once before

Shit, dad

Please don’t kick my ass

I know I’ve seen you trashed

At least one time

Can I blame it

On one of my dumb friends

It’s been awhile

Since I have used that line

You couldn’t wait for something new

And yesterday I thought of you

It left me to think as if I couldn’t walk away

It’s too late, I fell through

Nothing to lose

A boy who went out when he finished all his chores

Nothing to do

They can’t trust me because I blew it once before

Nothing to lose

A boy who went out when he finished all his chores

Nothing to do

They can’t trust me because I blew it once before
