Shuffle Song Of The Day (12/17/18): “I Don’t Like Mondays” By The Boomtown Rats

“I Don’t Like Mondays” is a song by the Irish rock band The Boomtown Rats that appears on their 1979 album The Fine Art Of Surfacing. It’s quite coincidental that this song popped up on shuffle today, because I just so happen to be having the most Monday Monday ever. It’s been one of those Mondays that feels like it’ll never end, and maybe that instinct is right because it’s somehow only half way over. As awful as Mondays may be, atleast it’s a better Monday than the particular one this song is describing. If you don’t know, this song is about the 1979 Cleveland Elementary School Shooting. On the morning of January 29th, 1979, a 16 year old girl from San Diego named Brenda Spencer opened fire at Cleveland Elementary School from her house located across the street, killing the principal, janitor, and wounding 8 students and a responding police officer. She then barricaded herself inside the house, and during a phone call with reporters, was asked why she did it. She calmly answered “I don’t like Mondays. This livens up the day”, hence the title of the song. Something about that answer makes me feel so uneasy. You can just tell by the succinct nature of her 9 word answer how sick and insane she is, seeing as her idea of making a Monday more exciting is shooting at 10 year olds with a .22. If I need to liven up my Monday, I just drink a coffee, but to each their own I guess.

LYRICS

The silicon chip inside her head
Gets switched to overload
And nobody’s gonna go to school today
She’s going to make them stay at home
And daddy doesn’t understand it
He always said she was as good as gold
And he can see no reason
‘Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be sure
Oh, oh, oh tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
I want to shoot
The whole day down
The Telex machine is kept so clean
As it types to a waiting world
And mother feels so shocked
Father’s world is rocked
And their thoughts turn to their own little girl
Sweet sixteen ain’t that peachy keen
Now, it ain’t so neat to admit defeat
They can see no reasons
‘Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need oh, woah
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
I want to shoot
The whole day down
Down, down
Shoot it all down
All the playing’s stopped in the playground now
She wants to play with her toys a while
And school’s out early and soon we’ll be learning
And the lesson today is how to die
And then the bullhorn crackles
And the captain tackles
With the problems and the how’s and why’s
And he can see no reasons
‘Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to die, die
Oh, oh, oh and the silicon chip inside her head
Gets switched to overload
And nobody’s gonna go to school today
She’s going to make them stay at home
And daddy doesn’t understand it
He always said she was as good as gold
And he can see no reason
‘Cause there are no reasons
What reason do you need to be sure
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like, I don’t like, I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like, I don’t like, (tell me why) I don’t like Mondays
Tell me why
I don’t like Mondays
I want to shoot, the whole day down, uh, uh, uh
