With all of the celebrity deaths in recent years it’s become easy to unintentionally overlook certain ones. This was one that was definitely overlooked by many when it happened 365 days ago, but not by me. For that reason, I think Jon Dunsworth, more commonly known for his role as Mr. Lahey on Trailer Park Boys, deserves a little memorial blog on the one year anniversary of his death.
Although I don’t watch Trailer Park Boys nearly as much as I used to, it’ll always be one of my favorite shows. If you don’t know what it’s about, the plot centers around a group of criminal friends committing a series of failed “Get rich quick” schemes inside of a trailer park in Nova Scotia. Of the many great characters on the show, Mr. Lahey stuck out as my personal favorite. He was an ex-police officer turned trailer park supervisor that was constantly drunk and trying to foil the aforementioned schemes. His portrayal as a chronic drunk is perfect, which is especially impressive because Dunsworth didn’t drink alcohol. Can’t teach that kind of acting skill, yet he had it down to a tee.
Back in high school my friends and I would head to my house after school and smoke blunt after blunt while watching this show. It provided me with endless laughs through my teenage years and it still holds up whenever I decide to throw on an episode or 2 today. I’m really glad that the show decided to not recast somebody for the role, because there’s no way you could fill those shoes. Heroes get remembered, but legends never die, and he certainly solidified as the greatest on screen drunk of all time. To close out this blog, here’s a video with all of Mr. Lahey’s shit-related phrases. RIP John Dunsworth, and thanks for all the laughs
