Shuffle Song Of The Day (5/3/18): “Respiration” By Black Star Feat. Common

“Respiration” is a song by NYC hip hop duo Black Star from their 1998 debut and only album Mos Def And Talib Kweli Are Black Star. As if Mos Def And Talib Kweli didn’t have enough lyrical talent on their own, this song features Chicago rapper Common to add to its greatness. It’s a damn shame this crew didn’t release more music together, but all 3 of them have plenty of solo stuff out there. Side bar: Do you think you’d be able to see a black star? Space is pretty dark so I don’t think you would, but then again I’m no astronomer. About to email NASA and hopefully they can solve this stupid question I have.

Skyscrapers is colossus, the cost of living

Is preposterous, stay alive, you play or die, no options

No Batman and Robin, can’t tell between

The cops and the robbers, they both partners, they all heartless

The shiny apple is bruised but sweet, and if you choose to eat,

You could lose your teeth, many crews retreat,

Nightly news repeat, who got shot down and locked down

So much on my mind that I cant recline

Blastin’ holes in the night till she bled sunshine

Breathe in, inhale vapors from bright stars that shine

Breathe out, weed smoke retrace the skyline

Heard the bass ride out like an ancient mating call

I cant take it y’all, I can feel the city breathin’

Chest heavin’, against the flesh of the evening

Sigh before we die like the last train leaving

When the only pull you got is the wool over your eyes

Gettin’ knowledge in jail like a blessing in disguise

Not knowing the ways’ll get you capped like an NBA salary

I stood lookin’ at my former hood

Felt the spirit in the wind, knew my friend was gone for good

Threw dirt on the casket, the hurt, I couldn’t mask it

Mixin’ down emotions, a struggle I hadn’t mastered
