Shuffle Song Of The Day (4/16/18): “Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis” By Brand New

“Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis”is a song by the Long Island pop punk band Brand New from their 2003 album Deja Entendu. “Deja entendu” is French for “Already heard”, and was a backhanded comment for how played out and similar sounding music was becoming in the early 2000’s. Although a great album, I find it kinda funny that Brand New was trying to lecture people about played out music when their first album Your Favorite Weapon is the corniest pop punk album of all time. “Me vs. Maradona vs. Elvis” has become known as “The Rape Song” in the Brand New community, mainly because that’s exactly what the song is about: Taking advantage of a drunk girl. This song once again became popular after lead singer Jesse Lacey came under fire during the height of the #MeToo movement, and was accused of soliciting nude pictures from an underage fan years ago. I’m gonna try to play Devils advocate here and say if you can’t even receive naked pictures from a 16 year old fan, what’s even the point of becoming a rockstar? Isn’t that the whole point? Get rich and bang fans, that is literally the name of the game when it comes to being a musician. Was the girl underage at the time? Yes, but that’s irrelevant because she was probably hot. Case closed.

With one or two I get used to the room,
We go slow when we first make our moves,
By five or six I’ll bring you out to the car,
By number nine with my head on the bar,
And it’s sad but true out of cash and i-o-u’s

I got desperate desires, and unadmirable plans,
My tongue will taste of gin and malicious intent,
Bring you back to the bar get you out of the cold,
My sober straight face gets you out of your clothes,
And they’re scared that we know all the crimes they’ll commit,
Who they’ll kiss before they get home

Barely conscious in the door where you stand,
Your eyes are fighting sleep while your mouth makes your demands,
You laugh at every word trying too hard to be cute,
I almost feel sorry for what I’m gonna do,
And your hair smells of smoke,
Who will cast the first stone?,
You can sin or spend the night all alone

Brass buttons on your coat hold the cold,
In the shape of a heart that they cut out of stone,
And you’re using all your looks that you’ve thrown from the start,
If you let me have my way I swear I’ll tear you apart

Cause its all you can be,
You’re a drunk,
And you’re scared,
Its ladies night all the girls drink for free
